When we remove your old roof and install your new one, thoroughness is our standard. We remove everything down to the plywood. Though some companies do not remove the old felt paper (the inferior predecessor to modern synthetic underlayment), CHS always removes this layer.
After the removal of the old roof, our crew installs Ice and Water Shield in the roof's valleys (circled by red in the adjacent picture). Because water naturally runs down this area during rain, this additional layer prevents the water from slipping into the house through the edges of the valley's plywood.
Subsequently, the synthetic underlayment installation comes next. Composed of a woven polymeric scrim, synthetic underlayment easily outperforms felt paper. Unlike the older felt, synthetic underlayment will not mold, will not absorb rain water, will not easily split, will not crease and crack when subjected to sunlight, and will protect your roof from water while shingles are being installed. Synthetic Underlayment is also much lighter than felt but allows workmen to walk around without fear of tearing the underlayment.
After the installation of the underlayment, the shingles are installed. Coming in a variety of colours, the standard shingles used by Lewis Construction are GAF 5-tab architectural shingles. GAF has been in the roofing business for over 120 years and pioneered the use of the modern architectural shingle. These shingles are rated to withstand 130 mph winds and are the best selling shingle in North America! For more information regarding these quality shingles, visit GAF's Website.
Finally, the Ridge Vent and ridge-capping are placed atop the peak to provide ventilation. These vents provide an exhaust for heat and condensation.
Throughout the entire duration of installation, our ground crews continue to work tirelessly to remove any debris. Old shingles are regularly taken away in trailers like the Equipter, a special motorized trailer designed to catch falling shingles. The Equipter can be raised, lowered, and even tipped to dump shingles into a larger trailer. Extremely popular with homeowners, the Equipter RB4000 specializes in protecting landscaping from falling shingles.
